Super Bowl Sunday has come and gone. Appel & Morse hopes that you had
a safe and enjoyable weekend taking part in our nation’s pastime.
It is one of the most popular holidays for gatherings with friends and
family that football enthusiasts and casual fans alike can enjoy.
Unfortunately, Super Bowl Sunday also has a notorious history of a large
rise in the number of arrests for drunk driving. There is a much higher
risk of crashes and as such, as law enforcement is on high alert, searching
for potential drunk drivers.
More Accidents Occur on Super Bowl Sunday
Super Bowl Sunday is the most notorious for the number of accidents that
occur, more than any other Sunday or holiday weekend. In fact, one statistic
from the Auto Club of Southern California conducted a study over the course
of five years. The findings concluded that there was a 77% likelihood
of an accident causing injury or death on Super Bowl Sunday than any other Sunday.
Here some additional statistics:
- Most alcohol-related accidents occurred at 5 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday
and up to 4 a.m. the next day
- There were 294 fatal crashes and injuries on Super Bowl Sundays in the
years between 2009 and 2013, in comparison to other Sundays
- In Los Angeles County, there were reportedly 77 fatal accidents on Super
Bowl Sunday as opposed to other Sundays
- San Diego County reported similar: 40 fatal accidents on Super Bowl Sunday
as opposed to other Sundays
The obvious anecdote would be not to drink and drive. Law enforcement is
typically instructed to come out in full force and be extra visible to
others on the road, including setting up checkpoints and other areas to
patrol the neighborhoods and freeways on Super Bowl Sunday throughout
Santa Barbara and the surrounding areas.
